Dartmoor in the snow

Julia Stevens

"No synonym for God is so perfect as Beauty. Whether as seen carving the lines of the mountains with glaciers, or gathering matter into stars, or planning the movements of water, or gardening - still all is Beauty." John Muir

This past weekend I drove down to Devon to see my sister and family. The highlight was visiting Dartmoor in the snow. Not heavy snow, just a light sprinkling that swirled around us like icing sugar, dusting the ground with an elegant cover of white lace.

The scenery of Dartmoor is already atmospheric and endless, this white frosting just added another element to the beauty of the landscape.

I have visited before in the spring when the yellow of gorse bush flowers is the perfect contrast to the lilac of bluebells.

Whatever the time of year it is always spectacular.

With ancient tracks worn into the hills, lined with tree roots and stone walls.

Winter and country walks go together whether it is the beautiful Dartmoor or the wooded Surrey Hills.

As February is the coldest month of the year and my birthday month ... please can I put in a request for some more snow ! Thanks.
